Scholarship Program

This scholarship is intended to support a student who has demonstrated an interest in the fresh water resources and who is registered in a 2-4 year program majoring in the environmental sciences or related field.

Awards:
Depending on funding availability, one, possibly two scholarships in the amount of $400 will be given
out each year to students in their senior year of high school. All applications should be received by
March 15th, of their senior year and awards will be announced on April 1. Upon completion of their first quarter/semester of secondary school, the recipient will receive the award of $400.  A second scholarship may be given to a student who demonstrates a financial need.

Objectives of the Awards:
The mission of the Sauk River Watershed District’s scholarship program is:

a) To further encourage highly capable individuals to continue studies in the Environmental Sciences with
a strong component in one or more areas of limnology, hydrology, aquatic biology, and water related
majors.

b) To provide additional incentive and motivation for an individual of high scholastic achievement to
dedicate his/her professional or academic career to the field of fresh water resource protection and
water pollution control, and to recognize and reward such achievement and dedication.

c) To enhance and promote the field of fresh water resource studies and environmental protection by attracting people of outstanding ability and rigorous educational standards.

Eligibility and Qualifications:
The awards are based on academic performance, merit, scholastic ability, and demonstrated interest in fresh water resources.

a) Applicants must live within the Sauk River Watershed.

b.) Individuals must enroll in a program leading to a degree in environmental science, environmental engineering, or a closely related field with an emphasis in appropriate technical aspects of water
resource protection and/or water pollution control.

c) Registration must be as a full-time student at a recognized two or four year college.

d) Individuals must have taken advanced science classes in high school.

e) Individual’s experience should demonstrate their interest in water related topics.


General information required of all candidates:

a) Official transcript(s) of academic record.

b) Information on the program of the college or university in which the individual is enrolled.

c) A one page paper describing your plans for the future in the environmental field.

d) Additional supporting material such as recommendations from the faculty and information on any
activity, research, experience, papers, involvement, and interest in the field of environmental science
or water pollution control. 
 


Scholarship Procedures:

  1. A completed application must be submitted and accompanied by the Recommendation Forms
    completed by the principal or assistant principal, guidance counselor, and math or science
    teacher. The completed paperwork must be submitted by March 15th for it to be reviewed and
    considered.

  2. The SRWD Education Committee will evaluate and review all applications.

  3. When a nominee has been selected, the Education Coordinator will contact the applicant by letter.

  4. The intended recipient shall acknowledge his or her acceptance of the award in writing to the
    Education Coordinator by April 15 or recipient relinquishes the award.

  5. Funds will be released directly to the Recipient after completing one semester of secondary
    schooling and upon receipt of an acceptable proof of attendance at an accredited institution.

Applications are available on the Watershed District's website www.srwdmn.org.  Upon receipt of the
completed packet, the scholarship review committee will review the applications and, following their
recommendation, scholarships are awarded by the Education Committee.

It is the intention of the Committee to select as a winner an applicant who has demonstrated the interests
and desire to study our water resources. However, the Committee retains the right and sole discretion to
award the applicant(s) it feels is most qualified.

The deadline for applications is March 15.
