Traveling Library
Board: Students Learn about Wetlands
The traveling library board
is another tool the District uses to educate young residents on the
importance of the areas water resources. This interactive, hands-on
board engages students through the use of ‘touch and feel boxes’,
animal pelts and question and answer flip charts. Here are some
comments received back from teachers: “Students were impressed with
the actual specimens, that was their favorite”, “We look forward to
the board each year” and “the pelts attracted the students’
attention”.
The board targets elementary students throughout the watershed and
informs them of ways they can make a difference in the preservation
of waterways. The board is in route from October to April each year
spending a week at each school. The District Staff delivers and sets
up the board in the school, sends a letter informing the teachers
the board is there to share, then returns one week later to take the
board down.
Through the use of the traveling
library board, the District has another opportunity to educate
students on the importance of our lakes and streams. The board
demonstrates how people young and old can make a difference in
preserving and protecting this resource. School librarians have used
the board to center their book readings and library activities
around. Teachers take their class on a special trip to see the board
to further tie in topics discussed in class. In 2005, the
District reached 2,217 students through this program.
